IMPROVING STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY THROUGH THREE-STEP INTERVIEW TECHNIQUE

Nowadays teaching speaking is also important due to a large number of students who want to study English in order to be able to use English for communicative purposes. One of the problem in this research is the students were passive in the teaching and learning process because the teacher technique in teaching English tended to be teacher-centered classroom activities that the students’ activity was responding to the teacher’s questions. It means that students don't have a chance to be active during the classroom activity.
In this case, the researcher concerns in teaching students through Three-Steps Interview technique in teaching speaking.  Before practicing the technique the researcher observed the teacher and found out that students got low score in speaking class because they are afraid of making mistake and also they feel shy to express something in front of the whole class.
The implementations of the action in the first cycle were : the researcher explained how to interview well, the teacher explained about news item text, the students were asked to make group  consist of four students, every group was given a news item text, the students were asked to do interview based on Three-Steps Interview technique, one student in every group was asked to came in front of their friends to tell what they got from the interview, the researcher gave feedback about the students’ performance, discussed together, the researcher
gave clarification of the result.
The researcher gave oral test to the students in the end of the cycle. There were six criteria that were scored in this test. They were pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and content. In the fourth meeting, the result shows that three step interview technique improved students’ speaking ability based on the scoring rubric.
After all, i think that Three-Steps Interview made students easier to get the information in a text because the students could discuss with their friends in a group. Three-Steps Interview technique can make students more active in teaching learning process.
