PROMOTING STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL THROUGH THREE-STEP INTERVIEW TECHNIQUE AT NON-ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STUDENTS OF IKIP PGRI BOJONEGORO

One of the problem in speaking skill is the learner who are not encouraged to speak in speaking class. In this research the researcher tried to improve students speaking skill with three step interview. This research consist of two cycle. The data collected from observation checklist, questionnaire and documentation. In pretest there are 5 aspects that evaluated They were fluency, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and expression. The result show that students’ ability in speaking still low especially in vocabulary and pronunciation related to the transcrib of students’ performance. On the first cycle the result showed the improvement of students performance. Students made good progress on vocabularies such as dealinng with some verbs, adjectives and adverbs. the students’ grammar also increase very well. In doing three step interview each student should give questions and answer based on the topic provided. They only had 5 minutes to do interview in turn. That is why time management was really important. If there was a student who could not speak fluently and stuck suddenly they would waste the time.
On the second cycle Students talk a lot during the interview. It can change the atmosphere of the classroom into a more relaxed and cheerful one. Students speak English freely without feeling ashamed of using wrong sentences. They concern on finishing the interview more than saying correct things. It indicates that the students' confidence and motivation are enhanced significantly.
Three step interview contributes greatly on improving students’ vocabulary achievement up to the targeted level, even more. Besides, as a side effect reported through the field notes, it can also productively promote students’ involvement, motivation, mood, and affective atmosphere during the lesson.
